Is a corporate-employed graphic designer expected to provide his/her own tools, resources, software, etc?

I am wondering if it would be appropriate to ask my employer for resources needed to do my job such as software, art supplies, reference books, stock photography, etc…. Or it is expected for me to supply my own resources? Thanks.

It is the employer's responsibility to get the tools needed for the job. Your responsibility is to give them the best work possible. Let them know how lesser tools will affect that.

The corporate world is a funny beast. Most in the company don't understand the needs of the creatives they employ and it is usually a song and dance to get the things you will need.

If they are stingy at first you just have to show them what you can do with less and do the "cost analysis", (eek), for the things you need.

Are you an employee or a contractor?  An employer would normally be responsible, but not if you are a contract employee.  Then he would be responsible only to the contract.
