A stick of butter is half a cup: half a stick of butter is a quarter of a cup...those funny lines along the wrapper are not just decoration...they give you portions...each square is a teaspoonful, etc....don't unwrap the stick so fast...use the lines...(sometimes the wrapper is a little off, but you can usually eyeball it...)
