Question:

Is a diaper rash a teething side effect?

Johnny (9.5 months old) FINALLY cut one of his upper teeth yesterday, he had the symptoms of teething for over a month now - drooling like crazy, chewing on everything, etc.

But on Saturday evening and yesterday morning, he had diarrhea (sorry for the TMI, lol) and now he's got a bit of a diaper rash. Was it the diarrhea that caused the rash, or is diaper rash a common side effect of teething?

Sorry, first time mom here, and I don't know what to expect sometimes, lol.

Thanks!

  1. Yup....the diarrhea or loose stools is usually causing by the excessive saliva (drooling) while teething, which in turn causing a diaper rash.  What fun for the poor babes huh?  Dealing with all the pain of teething, then finally the tooth breaks through, and then they get all these problems with their bums!

  2. not sure which one it is in your case. my son usually gets a sore bottom when he's cutting teeth but he doesn't necessarily have diarrhea. just to be on the safe side, use a barrier cream when you suspect he's cutting more teeth and you'll soon find out which one it is.

  3. The babies make sooo much saliva when they are teething that it ends up going through their system and burning their rears.  The docs say there is no connection, but there is for my kids for sure.

  4. It's probably a diaper rash due to the diarrhea. However, my oldest daughter would break out all over a day before she would get another tooth. I was rather anxious until I noticed a pattern. Watch for a pattern in your son. If this happens again, you may know what to expect! Good luck!

  5. Yes.

Doctors still debate with each other on whether or not teething causes a low grade fever and/or diarrhea (hence, the rash) but I'm convinced it does.  My oldest had both every single time he cut a tooth.

  6. when babies teeth their urine becomes much stronger which can irritate the skin causing nappy rash.....also, sitting in the dirty nappy for a prolonged period could cause it....having the skitter is common in babies anyway (esp breasfed babies)....but can also be a sign of teething....shouldn't last too long though....let him kick about with no nappy on for a while (with towels ALL around)...fresh air can help it heal....

  7. Pain and irritations causes our bodies to react. He is releaving himself more often building moisture in his diamper that causes the rash.Just change his diamper a little more often and use baby powder on his little bottom.

  8.   is simple to know thaoftenta child teeth she is putting everything into their mouths as a result they get a stomach upset as u cannot keep an eye on them all the time,By now they are crawling as well,so touching anything and everything,More over as they are potting all the time and sometimes their nappies are not changed at once hence rash comes about There is nothing to worry about but this will happen as he is teething but u need to see a dr for the upset stomach as I said this will occur time again Yes sometimes diapers also cause rashes so the dr will give u the ointment to put and sometimes let the baby be without the diaper so that the skin can breath, and will help the rash to go away faster

  9. yes it is!  Slap on the cream.

  10. A diaper rash is a side effect of teething. Put some Bordeaux's butt paste on it.

  11. my son is 15 months old and he just cut his 2 year molar last week . he got the diarhea from the teeth cutting , as he also did with his other teeth . the diarhea caused him to have alittle bit if a diaper rash . i would just change his diaper more often and apply desitain cream . that always seemed to help with my son . also keep in mind he might run a fever (logan had 103) , and once he broke his fever he got a rash all over his body . it was gone the next day . good luck
