Is a dirt bike safe to ride on the street?

My daughter's boyfriend just bought his first motorcycle which is a dirt bike. He cannot reach the ground while sitting on the seat. He is planning on getting his motorcycle license ASAP so that he can take passengers... my daughter. He has a long history of motor vehicle violations and actually lost his license on several occasions. That's just an aside. I am mostly concerned about his ability to operate a dirt bike on the street safely with a passenger while having zero to very little experience. I offered to buy the bike from him (more than he paid)so that he could purchase a regular street bike and give him enough money to take a motorcyle safety class (which he feels he doesn't need). No luck. What else can I do?

My daughter is 18 and in college. He is 20 and a HS drop-out.

  1. You can't fix "stupid".

Can't reach the ground?  What's he gonna do at a stop light/sign?  If you're old enough to remember Artie Johnson on Laugh-In riding around on a tricycle and tipping over each time he stopped, that's what this numbskull is gonna look like!

If the bike can be registered (has lights, fenders and other equipment making it road worthy) then he can ride it on the street.  Otherwise, he'll be riding illegally, hopefully get cited again and be off the road making it a safer place for all of us.

With no safety class he'll likely only get a learners permit for a period before he's eligible to get a license.  During that time, its likely he can't legally carry a passenger or ride at night.

I hope your daughter has enough common sense to not ride with this idiot.

  2. Call the police you can not ride a dirt bike on street.

  3. The advice I would like to give You is Illegal. He is an accident waiting to happen and I doubt He will ride ANY bike safely on the street.
