  1. Assuming the coins are genuine, you have some historic coins of very high value. All three of them -- not just the double struck coin.

Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins has an excellent summary of the Vermont coppers, beginning on page 61. Your double struck 1786 piece is mentioned on page 62 as one of two varieties of Type # 715. Breen says that these coins are "prohibitively rare" in conditions above the grade of Fine. (It would be an understatement to say that I'm green with envy...)

I'd recommend that you make some effort to determine the genuineness and value of these pieces. Check in with the major coin auction houses in this regard. (Stack's, Bowers & Merena, and Heritage come to mind.) You may also want to get the coins graded and certified by one of the top tier services... the auction companies can take you through this process. Well worth your time for material of this significance, whether or not you plan to sell.

Anyway, the story of the Vermont coppers is a fascinating one. These were typical coins made in the newly independent United States from within the separate colonies. Coins of all types were in short supply, and materials available for coin production (steel for the dies and copper for the coins) was scarce and of poor quality. Consequently, mintages were generally small. And that's why your coins are so rare, 222 years later. In fact they were rare when they were made!

  2. It is worth a lot more: a mistake is extermely rare and the more rare the price of the coin goes up for example one of the most common double stamps was 1955 cent, thats worth over a thousand. Yours is probaly worth a lot more than the others.

  3. OMG!!! hold on to those coins!!!!!!! they would be worth sooooo much!!!!

ya know.... you could give the money to Make-a-wish foundation or a foundation for cancer or something =)

  4. YES!!!!! It Will Be Worth MUCH MORE. Do not get Cheated when you sell it. Very Valuable as a Collector's Item.
