  1. Skimboards come in  two main forms, wood core boards and foam core boards.  Wood core boards can only be used to skim on the thin film of water left behind when  a wave breaks and washes onto the shore.  Wooden boards are too dense and do not float, therefore they are useless in water any deeper than 5cm. However, you can use a wood core board to skimboard on waves but a different technique is required and it is only possible on certain waves.

Foam core boards can be used for any form of skimboarding, due to their lightness and the fact that they float.  Foam skimboards are used for shorebreak skimming, which is running straight into a shorebreak and doing a quick snap turn and then riding the wave in. The average foam skimboard can have three different types of rocker, be made out of e-glass, s-glass or fibreglass and have a uniquely designed aerodynamic shape.  And the foam core can be vacuum sealed.

So, assuming you're a beginner, I'd say definitely go with a foam core board. (Most people just refer to them as fibreglass boards because they don't really get into specifics). They're much easier to learn on and you'll probably never use a wood core... nor will you ever want to. And YES it's better for tricks. lol

  2. A fiberglass one is less expensive, lighter, and more disposable.

Wood ones just require more time and skill to make. They also use fiberglass as the outside coating on the wood ones, so there isn't much more that is different --- it is just a different core material. The fiberglass ones use a foam core.
