I think it depends on personal preference.  

I prefer finches because they have a pretty song, does not require human interaction all the time and pleasant to look at. Drawback is they are not very tameable.  More to look at than interact with.

If you want interaction with your birds probably parakeets is the way to go.  They are also pretty, can be taught to talk or whistle.  Can be taught to do little trick or sit on your finger.  When I had my parakeets I enjoyed them but couldn't stand the noises they made all the time.  Drove me mad.  

Best thing is to do is read up on these type of birds and see which one best suits you and not which one other people like better.

I vote for the parakeet. They are more social and bond better to people. I've never seen anyone taking a finch out of its cage and having it perch on their finger or learn to do tricks. And a finch doesn't "talk" like a parakeet and doesn't play with toys either.
