Question:

Is a firm mattress a good thing?

I've recently been growing annoyed with my mattress late at night when I can't sleep. It feels uncomfortable in that it's overly firm. I cant sink into it whatsoever- it doesn't sink in the slightest under my body. I don't find this comfortable, yet when looking up mattresses on the internet, they are rated on the levels of firmness, and my own mattress advertises having twice the number of springs as a regular mattress, which surely would make it firmer... so should mattresses be firm? Am I getting annoyed over nothing? I just find it very uncomfortable- it is so firm that I feel no difference in sleeping on the floor than on my mattress!

  1. The idea that the firmer the mattress the better is a myth. Everyone's back is different; a firmer mattress than you need can cause back problems just as easily as too soft a mattress.

I'd suggest you try a thick mattress pad (such as a featherbed) before going to the expense of a new mattress. But for God's sake don't keep sleeping on an uncomfortable bed because some expert tells you that firm mattresses are always better - that pain and discomfort is a sign that the mattress is wrong for you.

The difference between women and men, by the way, is that women's spines are naturally more curved when viewed from the side, because women's pelvises are angled differently to allow for pregnancy and childbearing. Women often feel more comfortable on a softer mattress for that very reason - a very hard mattress can put too much pressure on the hip joint because it pushes the back into an unnaturally straight alignment.

  2. it just depends on what you do usually men prefer a firm mattress because they have hard jobs with heavy lifting or whatever and its better on their back if you have an office job or something easy and you dont stress your back alot a softer mattress would be ok.. so it just depends on the person

  3. It's an old myth that mattresses must be firm. I have a memory foam mattress and it has worked out great! You should do some research on memory foam mattresses...check out this memory foam mattress review site:

  4. your back appreciates  your firm mattress
