  1. Having back problems for many years and gone through lots of mattresses.Plush ones were to soft and the hard ones were to hard. But I recently bought TempurPedic kind at Costco for $675.00 king size. The best one I had so far and most of my back   my pains have gone. And the great thing about Costco is you can return it back.

  2. Firm is always better because it gives support, but you should really know what area of your back you are dealing with.  For example, if it is the lower back you definetly want firm, and mabye a pillow underneath depending on your weight.  Conversely if it is the upper back to your neck, your doctor or chiro. may even advise you to sit in an upright position for a few days to sleep, which means sleeping in an easy chair.

In general though, firm is universally heralded to be better!

  3. I always here you need firm but my plush one does not bother my back at all and it feels like I am sleeping on a cloud!

  4. FIRM IS BEST

  5. Unless it is an all foam mattress such as Tempurpedic, memory foam, or latex foam, it will have some kind of coils.  In a coil mattress the coils are what give you support.  The higher the coil count the more support...and the higher the bed will cost.  Beside the coil count coils are made with different thickness wire.  The wire in a firm mattress is thicker than the wire in a plush or pillow top.  Of course some manufacturers will confuse things even further by offering plush firm or firm pillow top mattresses.

The owner of the mattress store where I work had two disks in his lower back surgically repaired and his surgeon recommended he use either a Tempurpedic or a Simmons BeautyRest mattress.  I would take the advice of an orthopedic surgeon.

Ask questions and buy the best mattress you can afford.

PS - Tempurpedic controls their prices, but (for the most part) other mattresses prices are negotiable.  Don't go for the first price offered.

  7. plush is fine.  Having a firm mattress for a bad back is a relic of the past and no longer applies to today's mattresses.  You should just get what feels best.  Make sure you give it a good try out in the store before buying - hard to return a mattress.
