Well, back in the day they were made of pigskins. Thats how the custom of calling it a pigskin originated. Now days that the age has advanced and technology has as well we are fortunate to make footballs out of plastics,rubbers,string, and leather. So at the time its neither unless you are referring to its original nickname, then that would be pigskin. I hope i could help. :)
