  1. I think it depends on where you live. If you live on a busy hi-way, you're likely to sell more. The most I ever made was $80.00 (with advertising). You do need to advertise it in your local newspaper(s) to get the word out. List the major items you want to sell.

I hardly have them anymore because I got tired of dragging all the unsold stuff back inside or taking it to Goodwill.

  2. Where I live you have to buy a permit and with the newspaper ad, and it will increase the traffic to your sale, it costs about $30. So unless I have a lot of things to sell and some in-demand more expensive items, it doesn't pay much.   What helps is if you are having a moving sale or a multi-family sale or even better if several houses in your neighborhood have a garage sale on the same weekend. You can post free ads in public laundry rooms or other places such as stores with bulletin boards, post some ads there with details such as a map to your place, and an itemized list of the main goodies. Also www.craiglist.org is a good place for free ads and if there is a Yahoo community website in your area you can use that.  If you have the time and energy for your sale and hopefully someone who can help during the beginning hours and to watch when you get something to eat or use the restroom. If you have a lot of stuff to sell and you sell 25 % of it you are doing good, it helps to offer the people a chance to bargain with you if you really want to get rid of the stuff.
