I apologize if this seems like a dumb question. I am interested in the paranormal and ghost hunting and am studying with some folks claiming to be parapsychologists but to me we are just ghost hunters. None of us have any college so I am just wondering.

I don't really feel comfortable calling myself a parapsychologist. Am I over reacting?

  1. I think it can be. Here are just two definitions I found. I don't think there is any degrees needed for either. I may be wrong but that is what I think.

  2. They are and they aren't the same. Parapsychologists claim to be "experts" and get an "education" in the field. But here is the cold hard truth, you can't have experts in a field of theories. Ghosthunters across the board do not agree on every aspect of what classifies and what does not classify as a haunting. I don't agree all the time with the Society I am involved with, it happens and its normal.

Call yourself what your comfortable with. Don't dismiss the parapsychologists either, sometimes you can learn a great deal from them. Just be sure to follow your instincts on what you think is right and wrong.

  3. do u know one thing i too love paranormal stuffs and all the  weird and strange stuffs and my friends think that i am just weird but still i believe in all those psychic things too. so it is ur wish to call urself whatever u want and do not bother what others say or think about u and do not feel uncomfartable. just be urself. if they can accept the way u r then they r ur real friends and think what they think about u. they just like u the way u r, right? so don't worry, feel free and call u whatever u think is best. for more information on psychics and ghosthunters go to,

  4. Feel free to call yourself whatever you want. While they are not the same thing.Anyone can call themselves either or both.Their are no qualifications required for either one.

  5. well id say that a parapsychologist is some one who has a PHD in psychology in the paranormal Field. and a ghost hunter is some one with no degree in any Field of study. so yeah they are different but both study the paranormal.

  6. No they are not. A Ghost Hunter or Paranormal Investigator is a description (like a job description) of what a person actually does.

For Parapsychologist it depends on which definition you use. If you apply the rules of academia for example a Parapsychologist is a person that holds a PhD in Parapsychology just like a Psychologist holds a PhD in psychology. Lloyd Auerbach  who holds a Masters degree in parapsychology call himself a parapsychological associate (a Masters in psychology makes you a psychological associate).

On the other hand if you use the definition of scientific and scholarly study of parapsychology then a person with a PhD in any field that conducts research in parapsychology could be called a parapsychologist. Most full members of the Parapsychological Association hold a PhD or other doctoral level degrees in a conventional science (medicine, engineering, psychology, physics, etc.)

I feel OK calling those people parapsychologist,

However, several scientist that conduct some parapsychology research like Rupert Sheldrake and Raymond Moody prefer to be called by their earned doctorate (biologist and medical doctor).
