  1. The government is a non-profit organization.   It does not exists to make a profit because the public profits from it.

Political organizations can be non-profit too, like the Washington State Democrats.  Charities are most of the time profit too since they exists to help others and do not make a profit.

  2. Non profit organizations must conform to strict guidlines to maintain the tax exemp status.  Non profit organizations must also prospect funding sources.  Operation levels are relative to the level of funding.

Government organiztions have the benefit of US Treasury for funds.  Accountability is less stringent than non profit.

  3. Government organizations are different than non profit organizations.  Non profit organizations obtain their status by providing services that are for the good of the community, such as education, health care, housing, etc.  In return, the government waives taxes.  The organization also agrees to reinvest profits into the organizations to provide more services.  Unlike for profit organizations, whose earnings are shared by owners.

The government also runs several organizations that are also for the public good such as Center for Disease Control, law enforcement agencies, etc. However, these are not non profits.  Non profits are private organizations.

The Washington State Democrats seems to be a chapter of the Democratic National Committee.  I do not believe this is a non profit.
