  1. It depends - if it's privately owned, then the owners will most certainly be making a profit. If it is a registered charity, then it will be non profit.

  2. It is considered a non profit unless it is private. I do not know why.

  3. It depends on how it's being run and who's operating it.  I used to work at such a place and it was most definitely a for-profit business.  I would have to say that most of the privately run homes are for-profit.  I would also guess that most of the non-profit homes are government runned or at least heavily government assisted.

  4. most are run by social services agencies that are non profit--there is just little money making ----the residents are on SS or SSI....

there are some that can be profit making--but I would guess they would have to privately funded by charging rich families high rent/fees for services

in my area there are no for profit homes

  5. Group homes can be profit organizations or non-profit organizations. It depends on how they was set up business-wise.

  6. Every group home is different, but I don't think all group homes are considered  a non profit organization.  There are group homes for the mentally disabled only, and group homes for the elderly.  Most group homes are privately owned by a company that hires staff workers.  I visit a group home on a regular basis, and it is owned, and operated by a company in another city.

  7. It depends entirely on how they are funded.

Some are funded by nonprofit organizations and their intent is to bring in enough money to pay the staff and the expenses and perhaps have some amount of money in the bank for unexpected expenses - but make no actual profit.

Others are funded by profit organizations as a business and their goal is to provide a service while making money for the business. This is rare because the costs to keep such a facility going are no where near what the individuals in them can contribute.

  8. An non profit (NPO's) organization objective is to support or engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit. Most non-profit organization aim to provide programs and services that are of benefit to others and might not be otherwise provided by local, state, or federal entities

Where as profit-making corporations exist under the premise of earning and distributing taxable business earnings to

    shareholders/stakeholders.

That being said group homes as the others have said can be either non-profit or for profit, and are either owned by a government body or non-government body. Some NPO's maybe entitled to government funding, depending on the service they provide, which helps in maintaining or providing further support services where needed.
