Im currently in the proccess of buying a home (first time homebuyer), the lot is half an acre which is a lot larger then the others i was looking at but its a great deal and a better neighborhood. I know i will be able to afford my mortgage, gas, food, all the essentials like that but with not having much experience of living away from my parents i have a feeling that money will be somewhat tight untill i figure out how to deal manage it really well. I own a pushmower but i dont want to fork over the money for a riding mower. I dont have the energy to mow a lot after work but i probobly could suck it up and do it. Should I rent a room cheap or maybe free to a freind but tell them they must to mow the grass every week? Buy a riding mower? or just use my pushmower and maybe do half of it a day?

  1. That depends, a roomate is a good idea if your single. You could ask if they like doing yardwork, but I wouldn't expect them to do it by themself, you should do it with their help. Once your settled in, you can decide whether you want to upgrade to a larger self propelled, push mower or a riding mower. There are so many to choose from, when your ready, don't limit your search to the big home center stores, look also at the different types and models on the internet first. Once you find a model you like, then shop for price.

    Good Luck,  ;-)

  2. My lot size is 6/10 ths of an acre, and I push mowed it for 10 years. Thats about the limit you`d want to push-mow at once, in my opinion. It`s OK when the weather isn`t too hot or humid, or as long as the grass isn`t allowed to get too high. If it sets in a rainy spell, and you get behind, or when the summer gets very hot and muggy, believe me, It gets rough. Allow about two hours if good mowing conditions, and without stopping. Also, my lot is pretty level. If yours is unlevel, it takes longer. By the time I got done, sweat was usually running off my elbows.

  3. First of all Congrats on buying your first home!!!!!

But you should be able to mow it very easily, I can push mow my hilly lawn in an half an hour, which is about 3/4 of an acre.

  4. Dude, If you know you're going to be there a long time get a riding mower.

  5. Buy a ride on mower

  6. If you have a self propelled push mower you'll be fine otherwise it's going to be tough

  7. not at all i have almost an acre and i do mine in about 1 1/2 with a push

  8. My parents have a 2 acre yard and they have a push mower.  Yes, it takes longer and requires more effort than just sitting on your butt and riding around.  But you also get a great workout that you don't have to go to the gym for.  Unfortunately, so many people these days like to take the easy way out instead of putting forth a bit of effort.

Also, if memory serves me correctly from when I was a kid and used to do the lawn at home, it took about 4 hours.  This would mean that your half acre would take about an hour or so (assuming that you don't have to stop a lot to pick up limbs and twigs and such).

  9. I have 1/3 acre and it's a breeze with a push lawnmower. 1/2 acre does not sound a lot

  10. I would go ahead and use the push mower. It really isn't that much. I think that after you see just how much nicer it looks after you get done mowing your own lawn it will be worth it.

  11. I have over half an acre and it takes me no more than 2 hours to mow with a push mower..It wouldn't be feasable for me to even buy a riding mower...If I had one I couldn't use it really for I have so many arbors  and greenhouses and other structures It would actually take me longer to try to mow with a riding mower...even a zero turn one...I guess if you had a half acre wide open without much in the way it would be ok, but not necessary.....I read some of these answers and personally..I just think some people are lazy lol...If you can afford one and this is what you want though..go for it..

  12. Having room ates suck. Suck it up and mow it. Do it when it cools off in the evening. My mom did the roomate thing. No privacy. People clash. Ruin your stuff. Yea not a good idea unless you absolutly have to because of money wise.

  13. My yard is also 1/2 acre :)

I mow my yard every week and I, personally, don't think you need a riding mower (waste of money)

  14. Mow it yourself. Half acre is not that much to mow .

  15. Half an acre isn't that bad. I would push it.

  16. Ride ons are expensive and push mowers are well a lot of work .

It all depends on your long time prospects for site gardens etc. And land lay is it hilly, flat etc

I own just over a third of an acre and had to buy a new mower after my last one died age 18yrs.

I brought a good quality self drive push mower, clutch gears etc and it cost about $AUD1400. do your research and done be afraid to ask persons when they are out mowing how they find their "mower" for use  etc.  Good luck
