Is a high school teacher allowed to give you questions on your final exam that they have not taught in class?

My high school teacher gave us a review sheet about a week ago and told us that was all we needed to know. On one part of the exam, we have to do a timeline of events leading up to Confederation in Canada.

He did not even TOUCH on this topic. Our class ended at approximatley 1937, and these questions go all of the way up to 1867. Everytime someone asked his a question about the information, or lackthereof, he would ignore us, not even bothering to answer our questions.

Is he allowed to do this?

  1. It is not a matter of what he is allowed to do, it is a matter of fairness. If you are positive he didn't instruct you on the subject tested you have the option to report it to the office. But I suggest you talk to the teach about it first, if he/she won't address it, then take it to the office.

And get your parents involved with the situation, they can guide you the best.

  2. Yes he can do it, but he shouldn't do it. I would talk to you teacher first. Tell him something like this " Mr._____on our exam there was a section that we did not cover in class nor was on the study guide. You told us everything we needed to know was on the study guide. No one every brought it up that we would have to know this." If he doesn't seem to care then go to the principle. When you go to the principle bring along the study guide and if possible the test. Highlight the section on the test that was not on the study guide. Also make it very clear to him that all you needed to know for this exam was on the study guide and no were on the study guide was this section. This is not a exceptable behavior from the teacher he should not have excpected you to know something he never touched bases on. This section should not be graded.

  3. I don't understand why everyone thinks telling on the teacher is the solution. He SHOULDN'T have done it, but he can do it. The same happened to me many times in high school

  4. There is such a thing as a "chain of command."  Don't go telling on your teacher.  Teens always say, "I'm no snitch" but they never hesitate to run to a principal or counselor to trash a teacher's reputation.  That's why it makes it so hard for teachers to trust their students!

Speak to the teacher about it.  Did you ace the exam except for this one part?  Maybe the teacher will be reasonable about it.
