Question:

Is a journal really a good way to beat writers block?

I love to write but I always have the worst writers block. I really struggle with it, and it's starting to effect my confidence in my writing, I just don't have any.

People always tell me that writing a Journal of your feelings every day helps big time!

I'm just wondering if it helped anyone? Does it really help at all?

And how did it help you?

  1. Journaling requires spontanaity, as does writing. If you can enter thoughts to one paper resource, then why not another? Perhaps splitting your genre of writing to encompass both personal experience pieces and fictional?

I write and publish non-fiction and can write on any subject at any time. Fiction is difficult for me, but when a gem of an idea presents itself, my writing is exceptional. Try balancing what you write.

If you choose to journal, perhaps you could also document your dreams, the subconscious mind will provide wonders while you sleep.

  2. I'm a writer and I have writer's block ALL the time.

    =(

  3. Most art needs to be practiced. Dancers go to class every Saturday and Sunday. Musicians practice every day for hours. Visual artists and writers should take heed of these activities and do the same. And yes, it keeps the mind flexible and active, allowing ideas to flow at their own pace. I have tons of sketchbooks and I write everyday.

  4. It does help. But you can't sit and think about what you're journaling. You just have to write. That way, when you go back and read it later, you only have raw thoughts, and not anything that you processed before you put them to paper.

Just try it for yourself. I find it helps me a lot.

    Good luck.

I only write short stories and poems though.

  5. Rather than writing a journal; how about buying a notebook and listening?

Look and listen to everyone around you. I gaurantee that every day you leave the house you will experience something (not necessarily anything to do with you and that's why you need to be observant!) that can form a story.

Then take the idea and change it. Add things, twist it, what other scenes can come out of this? Who are the characters? Better still: Who could they be? Why are they here? Transpose it to a different place, a different time... blend it with stories and ideas you already have. Very soon you have a story that can become an entire novel and it all came from those two people you heard talking on a bench... see? Try it!

  6. Journaling is the perfect way to beat writers block. Sometimes I don't even write complete sentences, sometimes I even just list words. Basically whatever comes to mind, scribble on a piece of paper, and it helps get your creative juices flowing! And occasionally the things you write down can even be used in a poem, song, or short story.

    Happy journaling!
