They can be but you have to look at the entire chart. Theoretically fire signs are most compatible with other fire signs or air signs while earth signs are most compatible with other earth signs or water signs.

Both are very stubborn and proud.  It can be good as long as all is going well but when an issue comes up it can a long bitter experience.  

There is a great book "Linda Goodman's Sun Signs"....she matches each sign and reviews the relationships.  She writes how "it is" and when I first read it, I learned things about myself that I didn't know how to put into words.  Very good reading and she has a sense of humor.
