I understand that most pharmacy schools will accept people who haven't done biology at A-level but i wanted to know how useful an biology a-level is in getting through pharmacy school and if i would struggle on the course only having a gcse in biology. Sorry, that was really long-winded haha, but hopefully what i'm trying to get at makes sense!

Atm i have decided to take Chem Maths and Geography a-levels but unsure whether to take physics or biology. Please Help!

  1. Hmm it's a tough one but i'd say for an opinion you can actually trust talk to some pharmaceutical schools, students of such schools (for a more subjective op.), the careers person at your school or college or connexxions

  2. Right Chemistry and Maths are necessary, but Biology isn't.

Biology is more favoured then Physics, for Pharmacy that is (if you where looking for Dentistry then it would be the other way around).

Universitys usually tend to go for people that choose Chemistry Maths Biology and another subject of the students choice, such as Art (this gives the image that you are multi talented in many different variety of subjects), but as you said you've chosen Geography, thats great!

Oh and you should maybe look into University Prospectisus, because each University varies from what they actually want.

    Hope I helped.

  3. Biology does provide you will the understanding of human anatomy, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and cellular function which is essential for being a pharmacist. With that said, provided you take Chemistry, Math, Geography, and Physics I am not 100% sure you would struggle without Biology in pharmacy school. The only places where you may struggle is when you talk about microbiology (e.g. bacteria, viruses, and fungus for example) and human anatomy. How much a barrier, if any, not taking biology would pose for you is difficult to say.  If your goal is pharmacy school in my honest opinion I would say drop Geography, take Biology, and take Physics instead.
