Question:

Is a libero allowed to hit from the back row?

Are they restricted to purely passing and setting, or are they allowed to drive from the back row? Are they allowed to jump if they do so? Or are they allowed to do anything a regular back row player is allowed to do, which is basically anything goes but they have to take off behind the attack line?

I've had two coaches and various referees tell me different things about this.

  1. a libero can do basically anything that any other back row player can do, so if they do hit, they have to jump behind the 10 ft line.

  2. Liberos are allowed to hit like any other player on front row!!!   If they end up hitting the set has to come behind the ten foot line and their approach starts behind the ten foot line as well!!!  They aren't able to hit in front of it though.

  3. yes

  4. yes a libero can hit from the backrow as long as they do not jump in front of the ten foot line, just like other backrow players.

  5. Yes they are allow to hit from back row, but they can only jump if they do not break the plane of the net. Meaning if they are tall and jump with their swing line over the height of the net then it can be called and the ball given to the other team. If the libero is shorter and can't jump as high, (meaning their swing line is lower than the net) then there should be no problem.

  6. yeah you do the same thing as a spike approch excepy you are behind the 10 ft line

  7. volleyballer has the only correct answer

The Libero can hit from the back row ONLY if the part of the ball is not above the height of the net.  If the entire ball is above the height of the net, it is an illegal attack.  The Libero can actually hit the same way in the front row.  If any part of the ball has not cleared the net, it may be sent over the net by the Libero.

The Libero is a defensive specialist, only.

  8. you CAN hit from the back row, i am a libarow too, but just make sure you DO NOT jump while hitting it... or the ref will call it.

            good luck!

       God bless!    :-)

  9. yes, of course they can, any person can hit from the front row, but the libero is not allowed to hit from the front row.
