Question:

Is a line necessarily straight?

I'm in college and I have art homework to do.

We are making a mural and it will be called "Encyclopedia of line".

I have to make four 4" x 4" drawings that represent lines, as my art teacher said a line is "a trace of a movement through time". He also says that lines are found every where in nature. The problem is, I'm not too sure what he wants me to do. Is a line always straight? Usually when you ask someone to draw a line they will make it straight... Help!

  1. In Euclidean Geometry, lines are straight. You are in art class.

I think your Prof. wants something else,

In nature, "a trace of movement through time," might be

tree rings, fault movement, sand dunes, or ripples in a pond.

The rings of Saturn show many "lines."

Photos of Earth's rivers from space, layers of dirt along the Grand Canyon's walls, and the shiny trail of a snail show lines.

    They are everywhere!

    Good hunting.

  2. no the ink\led particles are jagged.

  3. No way! A line is just a continuous stroke. It can be wavy, curled, scribbly, whatever! EVERYTHING IS MADE OF LINES!!! It's so exciting!!! 8D

If I may add, I think one of your pics should be a detail of tree bark or wood. Oh, and how about a closeup of a leaf...8D This is a really cool assignment.

  4. there is no such thing as a straight line in nature.
