Is a low centre of gravity on a motorcycle necessarily better?

I have found a nice deal on a V-Strom that I really like, but I'm wondering whether the reported high centre of gravity should concern me. I like the 650 twins, so I have considered such bikes as the Versys, SV650 (previously owned one), ER-6 and even singles such as the F650GS and KLR. But currently there is a good deal on a used V-Strom which seems a lot of bike for the buck.I've read countless reviews, my question is really about the centre of gravity.

The bike is used mostly for commuting, and the odd trips, I'm 1.87 metres tall, and weigh 93 Kilograms.

  1. well teh lower centre of gravity is more stable through corners.

  2. The lower the center of gravity the more ideal any vehicle would be in terms of physics. A higher center of gravity tends to create a top heavy situation, that means more lean weight and less traction weight on the tires. But these bikes are in a class that requires higher wheel travel and clearance, so it's inevitable that you would have a higher center of gravity.

Having a real low center of gravity on the other hand means your frame or other parts would touch the ground in a lean which is not ideal either. There's a range and I believe these models are within an acceptable level although higher. These bikes also serve a purpose and commuting isn't the primary purpose is it (unless your commute requires fording creeks, rough roads and terrain, or what this bike is intended for to be a combination motorcycle)

  3. Think about it like a gokart. Look how low those things are and they handle like there's no tomorrow.

  4. A guy of your size can handle a V-Storm easily, in spite of the center of gravity being a little higher than on a ER-6. Go ahead buy it, it's a great bike with an even greater engine.

  5. higher center of gravity make the bike a little more top heavy It may make you a little scared of leaning in to turns out side of that there is not much diff unless your planing on racing I wouldn't worry about it
