Is a low grade fever a common side effect from broken bones?

I broke 3 bones in my foot 8 weeks ago (surgery to repair and pins are still in for another week.) During my recovery I have been running a low grade fever (99.1-99.9) almost daily. Does anyone know if this is normal?

  1. It is defiantly normal, especially since there are foreign bodies (pins) in you currently and you just had surgery.

Take it easy and I hope you feel better soon.

  2. Yes, it is normal.  If it gets up to 101 you should probably go back to the dr.'s as it is probably infected.

  3. yeah...  thats normal as long as the fever doesnt get above 100.0 then u should be fine

u are having a fever because even though the surgery and the metal are a good thing ur body isnt seeing it that way and is trying to "fight the metal"

  4. yes its definelty normal for that to happen its kinda like your body trying to rebuild itself, pick its self back up. its just a way of recovery

  5. Your body may be responding to the pins in your foot.

It possibly views them as  foreign objects and activating a fever to kill the intruder or make the environment hostile to virus and bacteria Another possible cause is that there might have been some bacteria present because of the surgery.

    Were you given any antibiotics?

I would recommend you give your doctor or the hospital a call. It will not hurt to be safe. I have had a friend who had the same thing (pins in his foot) and it got infected and he almost had to have it amputated so just to be safe call and ask!
