  1. Both are very smart, after all, you take care of them.  Just like cats and dogs, they have their owners trained.

  2. African Grays are much smarter, although macaws can be trained to do more tactile things.

We have one of each and the Gray amazes us every day with her intelligence. You can watch her adding and dividing on YouTube. We cannot allow her to be left out of her cage unattended because she is also very curious and will go off and do "naughty things" like chewing baseboards, chairs, etc. She says the darndest things to us and almost always has an appropriate comment to contribute to conversations going on around her.

Our Green Wing Macaw is really quite dumb, but very good at opening things...like his cage and the Gray's cage. He is so dumb that he is content to stay on his cage ALL DAY and watch the world go by out the window. We take him outside while we are out and he stays with us, never attempting to fly.

A note of caution: If you are interested in owning a bird, please consider the amount of work they require. Birds tend to develop strong attachments to their family and will often perish (die!) if they are given up for adoption or let go into the wild. Our birds make a considerable mess every day and the macaw squawks very loudly. We've had them for 11 years and the only break I get from them is when they go to the bird kennel a couple times a year. They are like having a two year old...FOREVER.

  3. yes,they do.

  4. african greys are smarter, but all birds are very smart... crows are one of the smartest birds in the world

  5. the african grey is smarter . i have 2 of them and until i got them i didnt believe a bird could be this smart.

  6. An African Grey is smarter, but Macaws are still very smart. ALL birds are smart.

  7. african greys hands down even tho the maccaw is more attractive to ppl

but it all depends on how much your bird trust you! ^_^

  8. Although Macaws are prettier, I believe that the African Grey is smartre, they actually think on their own, not just repeat. But beware of the voices, they can talk in many voices, mimicking the voice of the person they picked up the phrase from. You don't have to actually teach them, they will learn on their own. But like a child, they won't start talking real good until about 3 to 4 years old. They, like all parrots like to be around people. They won't fair well if left in a room by themselves. They are very social birds, and like people. Mine doesn't like women, I can't handle him, only my husband can. Although most things he says, he says in my voice, he likes to listen to me more. Go figure.
