Is a metrologist considered to be an engineer?

not a meteorologist who studies weather. I'm asking about a metrologist- the science of measurement.

  1. The term "engineer" has gotten sloppy.

    In fact, unless you're licensed as an engineer in your state, you can not officially represent yourself as an engineer, even if you have degrees in engineering.  It is a criminal offense.

    Unless he has a BS in engineering from an accredited college, he probably should not represent himself as an engineer, even unofficially.

    Design of robotic arms would be considered engineering, calibrating them would not, but I may be way off base here.


  2. Meteorologists who design their own equipment with minimal outside assistance would be considered engineers.  Usually, though, meteorologists and engineers pursue widely different courses of study.

    Your friend would be considered a technician if he/she only calibrates equipment.  Engineers generally write the calibration specifications and calibrate few devices themselves.    

  3. I'd have to say no. Scientists such as a metrologist deal with study while engineers are more concerned with application.
