Is a mobile phone a necessity, if so why?

My friend does not want one (she can afford one btw, in fact probably 100) and she thinks they are not important and not a necessity at all.

I completely disagree.

What do you all think and can you please state reasons why?

Thanks

  1. A mobile phone can be a necessity to some people - people who have to do business in various places - Realtors, for example.  They are necessary in an emergency or when your car breaks down.  You can use them to report suspicious activity or a wreck.  However, it is not a necessity to be connected to your friends and family 24/7.  Without the phone, you can go to the mall, shop in the grocery, see a movie and not have 10 people ask why you didn't answer or reply to their text.

My husband and I use it when I wander off in the mall - he looks at watches, watches, watches and I want to go into stores and see what's there. He can call me and ask if I want some carry out when he is out and about.  If I am worried about his being late and not calling, I call him.

Our friends do not know our cell number or don't care.  If I am expecting a call, I put on phone forwarding from my landline.

  2. They are not a necessity, they are a luxury.  We made it for years (yes, YEARS) without them.  I have to admit that they are wonderful for trips, but beyond that they are a nuisance.

I don't like being connected and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  My cell phone stays turned off until I need to use it.  That is a perfect example that it is a luxury and not a necessity.

  3. Totally unnecessary!  What in the world did we ever do without them the hundreds of years we lived without them if they are such a necessity?

  4. Totally unneccessary, I've lived my entire life without one.

  5. To some degree I do not think that they are a necessity. Think about how long we survived before mobile phones. But on the other hand, we live in a different world now. Everyone must be connected at almost all times, or at least people want to be connected at all times. In reality though we could probably continue to live without them. I personally would rather have a cell phone as opposed to a land line because they are more bang for your buck. Plus, if I was in some sort of an emergency I can't rely on a phone being somewhere OR having someone assist me.

  6. They are NOT a necessity. They're a luxury.  A landline is perfectly fine and quite enough for me.  If I have kids, they probably won't have their own cell phones until they can pay for them.  Their clothing is a necessity.  Cell phones are not.

HOWEVER, I LOVE my cell phone, and I couldn't bear to be without it.  They are very convenient (as is my dishwasher, another luxury some think is a necessity).

Perhaps you should lay off your friend.  She is entitled to her opinions, too, and the right to live her life however she wants to.

  7. I think they are a necessity not because everyone needs to talk to their friends every waking minute of the day but because we are in a society where more and more people are just nuts.  If you break down on the side of the road and you are a MAN you still have to watch your back.  Phones are great to have in emergency situations.  Payphones are a rare breed now, and if you ask to use a store's phone, 9 times out of 10 they will say no.

  8. they are!

u need them for so many things

what if you get lost or like get kidnapped or something

  9. I think a mobile phone is a necessity in case of a car breakdown. Public phone booths are getting scarce and I certainly wouldn't want to wander around a strange area looking for one. It's much safer to stay in your car and call for help from there.

  10. Necessities are:  food, clothing & shelter.
