Question:

Is a normal hamster cage ok for a roborovski?

I used to have a syrian hamster and built up an amazing cage with loads of tubes and extras to play with. Sadly he died and so after a bit of a gap we thought we’d get some new ones, and opted for two little roborovskis.

They seem happy enough, and inquisitive about their new home (had them about a week), but I’m now worried cos I keep reading that they’re so small they might escape from a normal hamster cage. They certainly haven’t got through the bars so far though, so do people think they’ll be ok?

  2. Well how wide are the bars? 1.5cm around that i say is a normal bar width. They wouldn't be able to het out of that. 4cm that might be too wide. But the first one you dont need to worry.

  3. I wouldn't keep them in that cage because as an adult, the average size is 4-5 centimeters. An aquarium with a screen top would be much safer. Here is some proof of my answer. I hope your hamsters death isn't to bothering to you, but just keep remembering that all things come to an end and I will pray for you and your hammie.

  4. A Cage with a plastic top is best for Roborovskis, they can EASILY escape.

But you can keep the other cage for 'playtime'.

  5. If the bars 3/4 of an inch or less apart, then it should be fine. Besides,Roboros and other dwarves LOVE climbing around in their cages, and tubes aren`t a problem for them either. If you catch them chewing on the bars, don`t panic. Every hamster does this. Not because they want to escape, but becuase they find it a fun habit. (like me and fingernail biting!!) But anyway, you should only remove them if the start trying to squeeze themselves out through the bars, whitch I doubt.

    Good Luck!
