  1. p220 is Double action.  1911 isn't, "usually".  There are double action 1911's.  P220 has no manually safeties.  1911 does.  Do need more compare and contrast?

  2. About the only thing they share is the caliber.  The Sig 220 is a 'modern' double-action design.  The 1911 is an 'old' single-aciton on the the first shot design.  Both are good.  Some gun persons don't care for the single-action (first time) design.  Some don't care about the first shot being double-action or not.  So you see, it just a matter of personal preference.

In a semi-automatic pistol I prefer Glock's 'safe-action' design myself, which is sort of a 'double-action everytime' and feels more like a smooth double-action revolver in that every shot is the same.  I do own a 1911 but it is a Colt Lightweight Commander in .38 Super which I love as a shooter but would not be my primary duty-carry weapon if I had my durthers.  I don't care for Sig Sauer's customer relations department but do acknowledge that they make a fine pistol. And I favor the more powerful 10mm cartridge over the venerable .45 acp, but then, that's just me!  What's best is what works for the individual shooter.

  3. The P220 is a double-action semi-automatic pistol with a hammer dropping safety. The first shot is fired double-action, with the hammer at full down position, the trigger moves the hammer to full c-o-c-k and then trips the sear permitting the hammer to fall and fire the first shot.  In most models, the remaining shots in the magazine are fired in single-action mode, i.e. the hammer is left in the c-o-c-k-ed position when the slide cycles to eject the empty and chamber a fresh cartridge.  Some variations are Double-Action Only, aka DAO, and use the double-action trigger pull for all shots, just like a double-action revolver.

The Colt M-1911, and copies by other companies, is a single-action semi-automatic.  That means that the hammer must be c-o-c-k-ed for the first shot, and the slide c-o-c-ks the hammer for each succeeding shot.

  4. Completely different animal;s except they both launch 45 ACP.

Sig is Double/Single Action whereas the 1911 is Single Action only. Both semi auto and single stack magazine fed pistols.

The Sig has the edge on accuracy.

  5. two completely different guns that fire the same bullet. just google image each one and you will see the differance
