Is a passport needed at the border patrol checkpoints?

In every american border city there is a border patrol checkpoint 18 to 20 miles north of the city. will i need my passport to go beyond that point?

  1. Passport is needed when crossing the border.


  2. If you cross the border yes - but your question is specific to a Border Patrol checkpoint which is not at the border.

    You'll be asked for your citizenship.

    If you answer U.S. (and you are truthful - no) but if you are foreign born - yes.

  3. If you are a Canadian citizen, you just need a photo I.D. and birth certificate to cross border and beyond by LAND.   If you are a Mexican citizen, you must have your Mexican passport and a visa to enter the U.S.
