Is a passport needed??

Hi everyone...I come from europe to visit usa and I wanted to travel from New York to San Francisco by train. What I was wondering is if they will ask for my European passport on the train or not?? Or do they only check my train ticket and no passport or ID?? Thanks everyone!!

they will check your passport on entering and leaving the USA

if you are already in the US travelling to another US destination no passport will be required.   However you will not be able to entere the US without a passport.

They will just check your ticket, while traveling, although some train stations are starting to implement a requirement to show ID's like at airports.

I'm 99% sure they will want some sort of photo ID. why would it matter anyway unless you were doing something you shouldn't be doing?!

YES!  Per Amtrak website:

Amtrak customers 18 years of age and older must produce valid photo identification when:

Obtaining, exchanging, and refunding tickets

Storing baggage at stations

Checking baggage

Sending Amtrak Express shipments

Onboard trains, in response to a request by an Amtrak employee

Please note that unaccompanied children 15 and older must also produce valid photo ID when purchasing tickets.

no. you are already in the country, and in no way are you leaving again. but its good to have just in case they need I.D.

so have it handy.

I think you only need your passport for traveling to different countries and identification.

You should bring it just in case.

It depends.  If you use the automatic ticket pick up then you probably will not be asked for ID.  The computer will verify your identity when you swipe your credit card.  However, if you choose to pick up your tickets in person then they will most certainly want to see ID.  Once you have your tickets you will likely not be asked for any ID but make sure to have it on you just in case.

PS I'm assuming you purchased your tickets in advance on the internet or by phone.
