  1. Yes,

PDA's can run on a selection of operating Systems:-

Palm OS (Palm and Treo & Sony)

Windows Mobile (many inc HP and Treo)

    Symbian (Nokia)

    RIM Blackberry. (older blackberry)

    Mac OS (iPhone)

They are essentially cut-down computers or even smart Phones that are designed to be used in the Palm of you hand hence Palmtop.

although Palm made the original Palmtop and Palm OS many other makers have worked PDA's with HP's iPaq being well known. but there are also Sony Clie (palm OS based) and a few others.

if you use one make sure its compatible with your computer to file transfers - all are OK for Windows but for Linnux and Mac OS only Palm OS, Blackberry OS  and the iPhone(OS X) work well. (which means the new Blackberry running Windows mobile ) would not work but older ones would.
