Has the price of copper gone up where it would be worth more money to take the jar of pennies I have to a scrap metal center than to the bank?

  1. It costs more than a cent to make a penny, but the material in the penny is not worth more than a cent (the difference comes from costs inherent in the minting process).

However, the material in a nickel is worth than five cents.

  2. .03 (three cents) as of today, but only pre-1982 pennies (95% copper, 5% zinc) are worth that much. Newer pennies are 97.5% zinc and only worth about a penny. However, I believe it is still illegal to send them to a scrap yard.

  3. yes a penny is worth more than a penny
