Just a quick question. Are personal breeders considered to be backyard breeders or no? Thanks.

  1. If the breeder puts the welfare of the dogs before their pocketbook, knows what they are doing, and doing it to better the breed, then they aren't a byb.

  2. I believe you mean "hobby" breeder.  The answer is, it depends.  Many show dogs are bred by "hobby" breeders.  They have an occasional litter, show their dogs, sell the pet quality on spay/neuter, the show potential gets co-owned, dogs are usually heath tested for whatever genetic issues that particular breed has.  They know their dogs pedigree backwards and forwards, knows what dogs would compliment and improve their lines.

Just because one is a hobby breeder does not automatically make one irresponsible.

  3. It depends on what they put into it.  A BYB is someone who doesn't do health checks, just breeds a couple of pets and hopes for the best.  A small scale but reputable breeder might live in the same type of suburbia, but the difference is the attention to quality.  Breeding stock is checked for health issues common to that breed, vaccinations and wormings are kept up to date, and puppies are well socialized.  A breeder should be able to mentor you on training questions, etc., as the puppy grows.  A BYB just wants your money and the puppy gone.

  4. A backyard breeder is someone who breeds their dog because they thought it was a pretty dog, because they wanted to make money, or because they thought it would be fun to do.  They are inexperienced, have not done extensive research into their breed and/or the breeding process, and usually know little to nothing about genetics.

I have not heard of a personal breeder either, but if this person fits the above description, then yes, they are a byb.

Always ask any breeder lots of questions, and expect informed and courteous answers.  Any breeder who cannot tell you an extensive history of their dog's breed, bloodline, potential health risks, and temperament should be run from.

  5. I assume you mean are individual breeders verses large kennels considered BYB and the answer is it depends.

If they are breeding dogs that have confirmation championships and/or working titles, have done all breed relevant health testing and otherwise know the breed backwards and forwards or are working with someone who does (refered to as a mentor) then no they are called hobby breeders.  These are the people you hear us referring to as responsible breeders and are the people you should be getting your puppies from.

If they are someone who does any of the following: breeding a pet quality dog, does little or no health testing, are just breeding to make money, just think there dog is cute, are breeding mixed breed or cross breeds, want the kids to see the miracle of birth, want their dog to have just one litter etc then they are a BYB.

Large kennels that make their living off of their puppies are puppy mills, regardless of how well it appears they take care of their dogs.

  6. Any Breeder who does not do all of the fallowing is a BYB

    A) All health screenings for breed

    B) Shows or enters them in competitions appropriate for the breed

    C) Never breeds before age 2 and only breeds 1x a year

    D) Only breeds purebred dogs to the same breed

    Anything else is a BYB

  7. I have never heard the phrase "'personal breeder" before.

  8. Depends?

Is this person showing and/or working their dogs and earning titles on their name?

Is this person doing proper genetic health tests before breeding (OFA, CERF, BAER, Optigen, Pennhip, etc)?

If not.. then this person is most likely a back yard breeder.

A back yard breeder is someone who breeds their pet-quality dogs, either for fun or profit..  with no regard to meeting standards, work abilites, preventing health problems, etc.

  9. Is that like a "hobby breeder" ?

    IMO, yes!

Anyone who breeds a dog and the dog is not "worthy" of being bred (AKC champion, gentic testing...etc...) is a BYB.

  10. Personal breeder?  You mean someone who breeds their dogs just for themselves, and they keep the puppies?  I would consider them as BYB, yes.  Maybe not as bad, because they are not making money off of the puppies, but they are still breeding dogs without any testing, and they are not trying to better the breed.
