Question:

Is a preamp and/or mixer necessary with Shure SM58 microphone?

Hi folks,

I'm thinking about getting the Shure SM58 to use for podcasting, that is connecting to my PC's soundcard (a Creative Labs X-Fi Platinum).

Do I need to buy a preamp as well, or is that something I can achieve with a separate mixer?

I'm confused. Any recommendations?

Thanks

  1. That mic needs phantom power so it will not work by just plugging into your mic jack on your PC.  If you want the best results then you need to get a USB audio box like this one:
