Is a provisional patent good?

I just filed a provisional patent for a software/idea is this a good way to file a patent?

There is no such thing as a provisional patent.

What you filed is a provisional patent APPLICATION

All that does is capture a filing date.  It is only useful if you eventually file a non-provisional patent application within one year of the filing date of the provisional.

If you do nothing more than file the provisional application, you will end up with nothing.
