Is a "skanger" (ROI) the same as a "chav' (UK)?

Scanger is the Irish version of the noun s***k, meaning

.... often used to imply a lesser class of person, with no style or class. Usually of poor taste and probably never checks themself in the mirror before presenting themselves to the public    .... A derogatory term directed mostly towards females, usually young, suggesting sluttiness, lack of hygiene, poorness, cruelty, tackiness, or use of drugs/alchohol/cigarettes . ....   May imply promiscuity, but not necessarily. Can apply to any race, but most commonly used to describe white trash   .....

Scanger or skanger (IPA: [skɑŋəɹ]) (female: howiya[1]) is a derogatory term for a stereotypical member of a youth subculture group in Ireland, similar to the chav in the United Kingdom.[2][3]

The stereotypical scanger is known to wear a tracksuit, gold jewellery, a replica football shirt (especially Celtic F.C. [citation needed]) athletic shoes, tattoos, piercings, is from a working class area, and speaks with an exaggerated accent. Male scangers tend to have cropped haircuts and drive cars with loud sound and exhaust systems. Pyjamas, bleached-blonde hair and large hoop earrings are popular with female scangers.[1][4] Scangers have a reputation for anti-social behaviour.[5]

According to Professor Terence Dolan in the Department of English in University College Dublin and author of A Dictionary of Hiberno English[6]:

"Much of the influence comes from London where the origins of the word 'skanger' can be found. I'm pretty certain this is a collapsed form of the word "scavenger" from a West Indian word used by the Caribbean community in London."[1]

Dolan's dictionary gives the West Indian slang word "skanker", meaning an untrustworthy or unreliable person, as a possible source of the word

They are called "Neds" up in Scotland. Do skangers wear hoodies, trackies, trainers and lots of white and just hang about doing nothing or vandalises everything in their path? Do they drink cheap wine and spit all over the place. Amongst other things, are they annoying and don't two tosses about anyone that's not hanging about with them? Then yes, they are 'chavs' or 'neds'

yes. i'm afraid i don't know the etymology sorry. they smell like lynx deodorant and wear tracksuits. HOWEVER we do'nt have as much burberry here.(thank god)

yep.  And the word Scanger existed before the word Chav.

i remember going to my cousins in Manchester and having to explain to them what a scanger was, about a year later Chavs are all over the media, like some sort of new invention.

Its pretty much the same yeah, people who use drugs, listen to dance and rap, talk with a common accent, Down here in ROI its the same anyway but there are sum who call some ppl chavs and sum ppl skangers...i dunno lol!
