  1. Basically they both use the same concept to hold songs. In some ways they are the same. In records, there are lines and dips that are carved into it which is the playable music. Then when the record is placed in a record player, a need is used to scratch against the record on the lines and dips. On a cd, it is basically made of tiny thin pieces of tech that is used for storing multiple songs, pics, movies, etc. When placed in a dvd or  compact disk player the cd can either can be played and watched by viewers or be used to store songs and such. So in conclution, records are not as the same as cd but have the same purpose.

  2. Technically, no.

A "record" is a vinyl (or other material in very old records) disk, usually black, with a groove on which sits a stylus or "needle."  The vibration of the needle within the long, circular groove, creates the audio of the record.

A "cd" is a smaller disk with digital encoding of the audio information.

However, sometimes people will refer to an artis's CD as his "record."   "What 'record' are you working on now?"  Although it will be released as a CD, it's kinda old-school to refer to it as a record.

    Hope this helps.

  17. No.  Record was short for recording.  Records used to be recorded on vinyl and before that a fiberglass type material.  I remember my father having lots of 78 rpm records that we played with and often broke as children.  Vinyl was cheaper and more durable.

Cds are compact discs that use a laser to read the recording.  Records used a needle to scratch the recorded sound.
