Is a restaurant hostess allowed to drink water?

I just got a job at a very upscale restaurant as their hostess. Its the no.2 restaurant in my city. I work from 2pm-midnight.

I HAVE to have water around me at all times. I have had many kidney problems in the past and i have to stay hydrated. I keep a small bottle of water under my podium. However I got yelled at yesterday and told not to drink while working?! They told me it looks bad to customers and also is against health regulations. Is this right??

  1. Lol...

Of course it's not right  =D

It's for the sake of your health anyway..

And did you tell the person who yelled at you that you had kidney problems?

Besides.. Why would the costumers be disgust if you drink?

Hmm.. Maybe they expect you to drink somewhere else..

And the restaurant IS the no.2 restaurant in the city so..

    o.0 =]

    Good luck ^.^

  2. no but u should use a clean glass

  3. Yes, I believe it is right. I used to work in a bar and we could only drink pop or water in the back but you had to throw away you cup when done. They dont want any ones germs getting anywhere. But if you have health problems then they should have to give you brakes to rehydrate. But as for drinking water while in front of customers I see why they say no, it looks bad.

  4. under the Americans with disabilities act, if you talk to your employer they are required to make "reasonable accommodations" to your kidney problem.

This might be a compromise because they can say that it presents an unhygienic appearance for you to be drinking at the podium.

Don't go into the deal with a bad attitude, just be honest and truthful.

  5. That should not be a problem you can take sips when no one is around.  Just talk to them tell them about your kidney problems.

  6. It's not against health regulations as long as there is a lid on the beverage and it is not next to food.

  7. i think it's ok to drink ,but you shouldn't drink or eat infront of custumer.

dont' put the water bottle with you, put them aside(like your station?)

when you need a drink, find a time where you are not busy, and drink fast. hide! dont' let them see you!

restaurant job are busy and tough, sometimes even if you are very very thirsty or hungry, you can eat or drink until not busy.

even can't go to washroom sometimes when it's get very busy.

    goodluck , take care.

  8. I'm pretty sure its illegal in someway to not allow someone to drink water.

  9. personally, as a human being having to talk to people all day, I TRULY understand the NEED to drink water everyday!! now, if the hostess had the bottle to her mouth every other sentence, well, that'd be different. but for her to take a swig, say "excuse me I was really parched" then continue setting up my table, I would REALLY understand that!! tell your boss that you either drink water while working or literally die right there at the podium. then ask which he'd prefer: a hostess who drinks water, or a dead rotting corpse!

  10. no that is not right they can not tell you to not drink water

  11. Whoever yelled at you was a jerk.  If there's someone above him/her, talk to the boss and tell him/her about your condition.  Ask him if he prefers you drink with a straw out of a glass, instead of swigging out of a bottle.  Tell him you'll only drink when you're not talking to customers, and that you'll get a note form your doctor if he wants.  (He won't.)

    Good luck!  :)

  12. thats not right.  i drank water when i was a hostess, but i did try to keep it descreet.  if there were tons of costomers i would wait for a better time.  but if u have a medical disorder u should be able to drink ur water whenever u feel the need.  tell your boss about ur condition and see what he/she says.

  13. I don't think it's against any health regulation to drink water. Especially if it's your own water bottle. Also, I'm pretty sure customers won't look at you disgusted when you drink water - they're probably drinking some form of liquid with their food also. Have you told them that you have kidney problems?

  14. ummm the person who told you that.......? is such a lier there aint no rule saying you cant drink water in there!

The man is crazy if he thinks that!

Just drink your water someware where no one can see you.
