Is a rose ugly because it has thorns or is it beautiful because despite the thorns, there's a flower?

this was the content of the priest's sermon when i attended mass this morning. i just wanted to hear other people's opinion. i think the rose represents anyone, regardless of gender.=)

    It is how you view it. Here is a formula for beauty. When you look at something you think is beautiful but with a flaw you determine beauty by using division and comparison. Determine if more or less of your observation with the beauty is comprised around the beautiful aspect or the flaw. If it is the flaw, then it is not beautiful it is ugly. If it is more focused on the beauty and not the flaw, then it must be beautiful.

    Compare negative and positive aspects. Determine ratio of negative to positive. If one out weighs the other, then you have your answer. I call it The Law of Divinity. Weighing Evil and Good in every situation.
