Is a scooter the same as a moped?

Also, what mopeds can a sixteen year old rider drive? What makes etc? Any general advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :D

  3. I agree with Bluff Mike.

    In Illinois, a moped must also produce less than 2 horsepower. Otherwise, it's considered a motor-driven cycle (AKA scooter), and an L class license would be required.

    16 or 17 year olds in this state can ride mopeds. Or they can take the rider's education course and get an M-class license which would allow them to ride a larger bike. Honda used to make a "moped" version of it's Metropolitan scooter, it was discontinued a couple of years ago. You might still be able to find a used one.

  4. Ins some states a  "moped" is any two-wheeled vehicle (including scooters) under 50cc or that won't exceed 30 mph, that the driver does not need to shift.

    You need to check with the DMV in your state.
