  1. dont listen to these idiots who say its illegal. its legal in MANY states including ur buddy NH to the north (i live there) but not mass

  2. I don't think they are legal anywhere. Their only purpose is to conceal a crime so it is hard to justify making them legal.

  3. silencers are illegal in the USA, sorry it sucks

  4. Actually supressors are legal in may states. They are NFA items requiring a $200 tax stamp though along with waiting and background checks. Supressors are used to shoot wihtout having so much noise and many .22LR's are made hearing safe without hearing protection although hearing protection is always recomended. Now I am not sure yet if Mass. is an NFA state but I will try to find out.

A lot of anti gun and misinformed people think it's illegal but they are not in may of the 50 states. In fact every time I walk into one of my local shops here in Indiana there are LEGAL supressors, sometimes full auto's, and registered short barreled shotguns under the glass counter that I could buy if I wanted or had the money which would mean I could.

EDIT: yes you can according to this lawyer trust site:

  5. silencers are not legal for civilians anywhere in the United States.

Various gun manufacturers have over the past 50 years, "unofficially" reported however, that they have produced silencers for the US government.  I guess it's okay for the government to use them, and not okay for civilians! But I guess that goes for just about everything, not just weapons.

  6. I am not sure about Mass. but in plenty of states they are legal. and to frogman, richz, and sportguy.

There are other uses for a suppressor than crime. We here in my state can legally hunt with them for certain animals and when you are dealing with crop destroying varmints it really helps when you can get 10 shots off before they realize what is going on

  7. MA law, Part IV Chapter 269: Section 10A.  Only federally licensed dealers and manufacturers and the police can own silencers in MA.  Federal law does not prohibit ownership by unlicensed civilians.  37 of the other states allow ownership by unlicensed civilians.  There is a $200 tax to be paid for each one you make or buy.  ATF approval is routine and takes about 1-2 months.  MA is not a gun friendly state.

If you move to a state that allows civilian silencer ownership, then expect to pay about $300 and up for the silencer plus the $200 tax.  While the silencer does not make the firearm silent, it will reduce the noise by 20-30 decibels (100 to 1000 times); reducing noise to about 115 decibels and enables you to shoot without hearing protection or bothering your neighbors.  Silencers can work very well with high velocity ammo, but are the least noisy with subsonic ammo due to the smaller powder charges and no sonic boom.

ETA;  Dustin K's link; http://www.guntrustlawyer.com/states/mas... is wrong.  Search the MA gov website for "silencers" (plural) to find the law that bans them except for police and FFL's.  Otherwise his post is good.  The MA gov site does not search very easy.

  8. Mass is not very firearms friendly so I don't know.

Many states do allow the private ownership of suppressed weapons and automatic weapons. They are covered under the National Firearms Act and the private owners have these firearms under a special registration system with the Dept of A.T.F.& E. on a Form 4 transfer. True there is a $200 tax involved.

I am one of the private citizens who owns an  automatic firearm and suppressed weapons on a Form 4.

So, rich z and sportguy where do you get your information?
