Is a solar cell net energy positive?

Is the energy generated by a solar cell over the life of the cell greater than the total energy used to create the cell. Taking into account material refining, manufacturing, instalation etc.

  1. Yes.

    The most recent statistics I've heard (at the annual conference of the American Solar Energy Society) are that a solar panel takes about 3 years to offset the energy used in its manufacture.  The life of a solar panel is rated at 25 years, so even if the 3 year number is off by 100% or more, the panel is still a net energy "win."

    The challenge today is to lower the cost of solar energy so it is the same as coal, natural gas, or hydro.  This will be done in 2-3 years.
