Is a sponsor considered a guardian?

My relative became my sponsor before I came to America. Now, my mother decided that she wants to leave and go back to her hometown. I'm considering emancipation but I'm a bit confused. knowing the fact that even people over 18 need sponsors, is my relative considered a guardian? Or just a sponsor? I'm 16 BTW.

just a sponsor, you have to go to court to make that person a legal guardian.
