Is a spring suit necessary during the summer?

Question

I surf at manhattan beach C.A. During the summer the water reaches 72-74 max. I live about an hour away from the beach so every time I hit the surf I stay out for about 4 hours. Is it necessary to buy a springsuit for the summer? should I buy just the wesuit shirt top, or should I go in trunks?
