As a step-parent, can I sign papers for permission to participate in field trips, summer camps, etc.?

  1. Unless the step parent has legal authority from a court, he/she is not a legal guardian.

A parent cannot appoint a legal guardian for their child, it has to be approved by the court.  As guardianship requires the other parent to give up their parental rights.

While school and summer camp may accept that signed permission slip, that does not make it legal.
