  1. depends on the maker----bose surround systems use a sub the you can hear all of the dialouge through, this is due to the surround speakers horrible frequency response, and they are try to make the sub compestate.

in a true home theater system, the sub should be set up to reproduce everything under 80 hertz.   meaning that you cannot hear the dialouge though the sub, just the Low Frequency Effects  (on the back of recievers there is a jack that has LFE on it that is what that is for).

and yes, like it was said before the sub doesn't amplify the signal, the amp does, the subwoofer just reproduces the signal.

for a true home theater system, you need the sub

  2. yes

  3. that is its pupose. it can output higher frequencies but it doesnt do it very good and compromises the effienciency of its job (playing low freqs). And btw, a sub-woofer dosent amplify the signal, it just reproduces it. An amplifier amplifies the signal.

  4. Most subwoofers, good ones anyway will output frequencies from 20 Hz-100Hz....anything higher than that can easily be handled by the other speakers.

  5. Yes.

  6. Yes, it is a dedicated speaker just for low frequencies.

But some subs are not self powered.  To use them, the L/R signals flow through the sub, then out to the L/R speakers.  When hooked up this way, the sub becomes an extension of your L/R speakers and the crossover circuit in the sub strips off the low-frequencies and passes the rest along to the other speakers.
