The word sum is just another word for an amount or a total.

For it to mean anything it must have a modifier, such as "quite a sum", "a large sum". or "a small sum" otherwise it is unclear and open to interpretation.

Also what may be a large sum of money to a regular person could be pocket change to a billionaire! LOL.

"sum" just means "amount"

'small sum' means a small amount.
