  1. Yes each state has a set of requirements that you must fill in order to obtain a licenses.  You must complete x amount of hours in the study of various subjects in which you wish to teach then you have to complete x amount of hours of work in a class room for your student teaching.  Also you have to pass certain exams in order to get your license.  (I believe all states require the passing of the PRAXIS exams.)

I would give you details of what you need to take and do but each state is a bit different and there are different licenses for different areas of education.  There is certification in being able to teach only grades 1-6, a certification of grades 6-12, a certification for only Preschool, an all grade certification for things like Special Education, Music, PE, Art ect.

  2. Actually, no.

Most states have varying means that allow a person to get a teaching license.  Some states have emergency certification programs, some allow you to sub then obtain a license, etc.  However, each state seems to now mandate that you pass the state test.  States do this as they want to allow people who have been in other fields the chance to change jobs - especially if they are a math or science person.

I have been teaching high school English for 7 years and do not have a teaching degree.  I have a degree in English and Psychology.  I entered teaching through a state emergency program (as part of this I had to take the state test, go through an interview, and take a series of workshops) and got a "special" license.  When my license needed to be renewed I had to go through another program in which I needed to complete a portfolio.  The state reviewed it and renewed my license.

Your best bet is to go on the Department of Ed web site for your state (use a search engine and enter your state name and "DOE).  Usually you can find information under licensing.  I would advise against calling a DOE right now as they are usually very busy processing licenses at this time and many DOEs have had a reduction in staff due to budget cuts.  But, check the web site, gather info and then call with specific, informed questions.

    Good luck!

  3. yes

You need certain things to apply for certification, there are a few state tests to take and you need a degree in education.

  4. In Texas, if you have a 4-yr degree, you can enroll in an alternative certification program and get your license that way.  Other states may differ as the other person stated.

  5. Each state differs.  Check your local school district or state department of education.

  6. Unless you have special circumstances, yes, you need the degree first.  The degree is what your university gives you.  They then submit your information to your state board of education and the state gives you the license.
