Is a three week old kitten's digestive system too tender for a little bit of canned cat food?

Question

I put some mixed with water on my finger and put some next to one of the kitten's noses so it could get the smell and it went crazy over my finger. Everything I've read said they don't start eating "solids"(cat food) till later - their teeth are starting to come in though. Should I not let them l**k it off my finger at all until later or is it alright for them to have a little if they want it?(They are still nursing from mom BTW, I am not bottle raising them.)

I think the kitten l*****g your finger is ok, as long as that's all it is and no more.

Some people will argue strongly against giving any age cat canned food, but my kittens ate it last summer & they turned out fine.

I didn't plan on the kittens eating it - I was giving it to mama to give her a little boost during her nursing period.  While she was eating it one by one the kittens came up & tried it & loved it.  They pushed mama out of the way so they could get it all!  I ended up splitting it into two bowls & added KMR (kitten milk replacement) to the kittens bowl & that worked out nicely.

while they are being weaned by their mum there is no need to do anything , when they are ready toeat mother will take them to the food dish and then you can give them some cat food .They are about 6 weeks when this happens.It wont do them any harm however  to try a bit as cats seem to know what they can and cant eat from the start, but they are not ready yet for big chunks of food so just be careful they dont get carried away and choke

just a very small amount if they are still nursing off momma kitty. The wet food can harm their tummies at this age (I found out the hard way when 2 of the orphaned kittens passed away, they should have had more KRM milk before I gave them the wet food- momma was killed by a car). Give them at least another 2-3 weeks with momma before giving them wet food. Momma's milk is best for them at this age and when she is ready, she will start to wean them off herself, you don't have to do this. for more information on raising kittens and what's best try this website:

it should be fine.. but try canned kitten food first

i did the same when my kitten was about the same age... he was really interested in the food and had no problems with it... only now he can t get enough of it... lol

Let them feed off mom yet. They are too little for "food" yet. When it's time for them to eat regular cat food, mom will "call" them to the dish or they will follow to see what she's doing by her food bowl and sniff around and may try on their own to take a taste. They will learn on their own with mom's  help.
