Question:

Is a tiny bit of Vaseline in breast milk dangerous (may be TMI for some)?

Every since I started the re-lactation process, I *have* to use lanolin when pumping. Otherwise, my aureoles gets dry, cracked, and bleed. Never had this problem before but I do now. Anyway, yesterday I forgot my lanolin at work. I had to use something (otherwise I wouldn't be able to pump for a few days and that's not an option) so I put a little vaseline on before pumping. Should I throw out that milk? Is it dangerous?

  1. Vaseline is a petroleum product, I would throw the milk out.

You don't want to chance it.

  2. Vaseline is essentially non-toxic. (People put it on their lips to treat chapping.)

It's fine to use it if it helps.

  3. i wouldn't throw all that pumped milk out. im sure its just a little and not like a glob of vaseline, and the other person was right we put it on our lips all the time. i think the milk is fine, h**l theres more stuff in the plasic bottles themselves. if u are worried i would just call dwn to ur dr's office and just ask.

  4. Its edible, there is some mild concerns about it because its not the most natural thing on earth (its a coal derivative).  But I had to use polysporin on my nipples for awhile and people put genetian violet in their baby's mouth (that's another coal tar derivative).

Are you sure your nipple shield isn't too small?  Your actual nipple should touch the sides of the narrow bit while pumping.

Yeah they fixed the pictures: http://www.medela.com/ISBD/breastfeeding...
